Zhi Yong, named Fa Ji, was from Huji Prefecture and active during the Chen and Sui dynasties. It is recorded that Zhi Yong was the seventh-generation descendant of the famous Eastern Jin calligrapher Wang Xizhi. As he was a monk at the Yongxin Temple in Huji, he is also known as "Venerable Yong."
