Newly compiled 1:4,000,000 "China Soil Map" is the most accurate national soil map to date, reflecting the geographical distribution patterns and soil resource characteristics of China. Based on this, the 1:10,000,000 "China Soil Resource Utilization and Improvement Zonation Map" was compiled for broader application. The book "China Soil Map and China Soil Resource Utilization and Improvement Zonation" serves as the manual for the two maps. This manual reflects the new research findings on soil classification, distribution, mapping, and zonation in China during the 1970s-1990s, and is divided into two parts.
Part 1 discusses the soil geographical distribution, which serves as the basis for determining the patch structure and combination of the soil map. It reviews international trends in soil classification and evaluates the development and current status of soil classification in China. It briefly describes the individual soil units within the 1:4,000,000 China Soil Map soil mapping units, elaborates on the mapping principles, research content characteristics, and the representation methods of the main map content.
Part 2 reviews the history of soil zonation research in China and proposes the design philosophy, principles, basis, and system of this zonation map. It details the main content and compilation methods of each zonation unit at various levels. The zonation descriptions are presented in greater detail, covering the three major soil regions, 14 soil zones, and 75 soil sub-zones of China.
At the end of the book, there is a comparative table listing soil names from the 1:4,000,000 China Soil Map legend and the United Nations World Soil Map legend.
This map and manual are available for reference by researchers and educators in departments such as agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, water conservancy, soil science, geography, biology, ecology, and resource and environmental sciences.
