Features: In today's China, which has joined the WTO and is undergoing economic globalization, there is a growing need to train various types of innovative talents in higher education institutions. To meet this demand, the Ministry of Education has actively promoted bilingual teaching. In line with the Ministry's "Project for Improving the Quality and Reforming the Teaching of Higher Education" and the "Excellent Course Construction Program," Higher Education Press has systematically and on a large scale introduced outstanding overseas mathematics textbooks. Through extensive contact with foreign publishing companies such as Pearson Education, John Wiley & Sons, McGraw-Hill, and Thomson Learning, and with the recommendation of these companies and the assistance of domestic experts, Higher Education Press has secured the rights to over 100 textbooks. After receiving sample copies, we engaged first-line teachers, experts, and scholars from domestic universities to evaluate these original textbooks. By referring to the curriculum design and teaching practices of relevant disciplines in China, we selected this outstanding series of textbooks for publication. These textbooks generally share the following characteristics:
(1) They are mostly published within the past three years and are widely used internationally, possessing considerable authority among similar textbooks.
(2) They are of high editions, having been tested and refined through years of teaching practice, with comprehensive and accurate content that reflects contemporary requirements.
(3) They are well-supported by teaching resources, providing great convenience for both teachers and students.
(4) They feature exquisite and abundant illustrations, complementing the text with visuals.
(5) The language is concise, fluent, and highly readable, making them suitable for students from non-English-speaking countries.
Among this series, the book Calculus by Finney and Weir (10th Edition, Pearson) can be described as "combining traditional strengths with innovative spirit." Since its first edition in the 1950s, a new version has been released every four or five years, and it has remained popular in Western academic circles for over 50 years. The authors possess high academic standards and a passion for teaching, having worked on the front lines of education for many years. Professor G.B. Thomas, who is nearly 90, has long been associated with MIT and has extensive teaching experience. Professor Finney also worked at MIT for a decade. Weir is the Chairman of the Mathematical Contest in Modeling in the United States.
The three-dimensional textbook Calculus by Stewart (5th Edition, Thomson Learning) is equipped with rich teaching resources and is one of the best-selling original calculus textbooks internationally. In 2003, its global sales reached approximately 400,000 copies, capturing about 50% to 60% of the U.S. calculus textbook market, with users including prestigious institutions such as Yale and numerous other universities.
This series also includes the classic textbook Linear Algebra and Its Applications by Anton (8th Edition, Wiley) and the outstanding textbook Probability and Statistics by Jay L. Devore (5th Edition, Thomson Learning).
In efforts to reduce the prices of imported textbooks, Higher Education Press has made significant and meticulous contributions. This series of imported textbooks reflects certain characteristics of authority, systematicity, advancement, and affordability.
