Author: Stephen Hawking

Publication Date: 2005-02-01
Features: S. W. Hawking: Defending history, we imagine time travel, yet it may violate the physics laws we are currently discovering. K. S. Thorne: Speculating about the future, regarding general relativity and its combination with quantum theory, what can we expect to discover? This is not a book with a single theme; it collects articles with diverse interests. Our editor, Ed Barber of W. W. Norton & Company, has supported this project from the beginning, even though we seem to have heard him express some concerns about it being a "potpourri" a few times, he still supported it. In fact, this is exactly how the book should be—a moderate collection of articles with different tastes. Science and scientists are also like this—mixing different figures and events together, without tight constraints, nor very clear organization. However, there is still an organizing principle behind the book: the works are excellent and readable—with hardly any equations. They all discuss modern spacetime physics.
