Features: Johann Sebastian Bach's violin concertos in A minor, E major, and D minor were clearly composed for the small orchestra of C?then. From 1717 to 1723, Bach served as the Kapellmeister at the court of C?then and wrote some of the most important works for the orchestra. Based on the diversity of these works—resulting from his study of contemporary Italian concertos—it can be concluded that he had a thorough understanding of the repertoire at the time. The style of the solo concertos, whether preserved in their original form or reconstructed from Bach's own harpsichord concertos, shows his development and improvement in handling musical material. The manuscript of the A minor concerto can only be traced back to 1730–1731, meaning it dates only to the early years of Bach's tenure as Kapellmeister at the St. Thomas Choir School in Leipzig. This dating is evidenced by a set of parts, including "Solo Violin," "Violin 1," "Violin 2," "Viola," and "Harpsichord Continuo." This set of parts for the A minor concerto formed the basis for the full score prepared by S.W. Dehn for Peters in 1852 and the blueprints for the old complete edition of Bach's works.
