Features: Learning to paint the returning army is a gradual process. Starting from the basics, each learning stage has different exercises and problems to solve. For example, issues like the light and shadow of plaster geometry, the texture and space of still-life sketches. This requires learners to approach the exercises with a stable mindset and clear objectives. Juniors in high school, after painting portraits for a long time, often feel that their overall effect and techniques are not improving. After reviewing their works, it became clear that there was a fundamental problem. For instance, poor execution of the gray surface structure and tone transitions on the face, as well as the lack of texture in the human face's light and shadow relationships, hair, eyebrows, and lips. These are all issues of texture in still-life painting. The solution is to revisit and dedicate time to improve this lesson. In the exam hall, portrait painting is usually done under natural light. The model's seating position and angle may vary unless intentionally arranged, and the lighting is generally not ideal. Therefore, we cannot focus solely on light and shadow or texture; both observation methods should be used simultaneously. For example, if the model's position has excellent lighting with clear light and shadow changes, it is suitable to prioritize the expression of light and shadow relationships. Conversely, if the lighting is poor, consider the inherent color variations of the model's face. For instance, dark-colored hair, eyes, slightly lighter lips, even lighter skin, and even lighter teeth, and then add light and shadow and structural factors. This makes it easier to grasp the overall effect of the painting. The works reviewed in this book are those of students who have been admitted to top art schools and ranked highly in their exams. Most are from Central Academy of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University School of Arts, Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, Film Academy, and Central Academy of Drama. There are also a few outstanding works from high school students preparing for the college entrance exam, hoping to facilitate communication with the candidates. May this book, through its compilation, be of help to all candidates.
