The author Jiang Feng, who aspires to write the best novel in the Chinese-speaking world, will not disappoint you! It is a story about family and death. Most people have or have had a family, and death is indeed unavoidable for everyone. But this doesn’t mean everyone needs to read this book. At least before the publication of One, Two, Slipping Toward the Railway Tracks, there were still many people living happily. Perhaps in 2003, I was too pessimistic, as many characters in the two long novels I wrote didn’t meet a good end. In the first half of the year, in Wèi Yǐ Bù Yǒng Shāng, I watched eight people leave one after another. In this book, three out of five family members also died. One of the heads of household, Lei Qi, who had survived several trials in Wèi Yǐ Bù Yǒng Shāng, unfortunately, died in One, Two, Slipping Toward the Railway Tracks. God bless you, Mr. Lei Qi. This is truly not Jiang Feng’s fault. The idea for this story came to me in the summer of 1999. That year, I saw three middle-aged men commit suicide. After that, I wanted to use a novel to explore the pressures a man faces from society, family, and dignity. The original title was My Father’s Glory, but because I added some stories about my sister, my cousin, and my mother when I started writing, the title also became longer. What I mean is that life cannot improve or stop because of someone’s suicide. In most cases, the shadow after suicide will pull life in a worse direction.
