Ji Gong is a well-known figure in Chinese folklore. He was unconventional, often seen in tattered monk's shoes, holding a broken fan, and always smiling as he sang while walking. Although he was a monk, he ate meat and drank wine, breaking the rules of the Buddhist monastic order. He appeared mad, yet he saved people in danger and punished evildoers with humor. His wisdom was hidden in his humor, and his kindness was reflected in his magnanimity.
An elderly man, desperately searching for his long-lost daughter, was about to hang himself when Ji Gong intervened and saved him, helping the father and daughter reunite. Qin Gong, a tyrannical young man who abducted women and committed countless evils, was transformed into a "big-head pot" by Ji Gong. As Ji Gong walked, singing and storytelling, he left behind many touching tales.
Ji Gong was a real historical figure in China. There were records of him during the Song Dynasty, and by the Ming Dynasty, he had become a legendary figure. By the Qing Dynasty, he had evolved into the 240-chapter chaptered novel The Complete Biography of Ji Gong. His image has deeply resonated with people in China and even around the world.
