Machine translation has a very close connection with scientific translation. Early machine translation research was primarily aimed at translating scientific and technical literature. Today, with the rapid development of science and technology, the quantity of scientific and technical literature is increasing daily, overwhelming us. While manual translation produces high-quality translations, it is too slow to meet the growing demand for scientific and technical literature, making machine translation an important means to address this issue. The author served as the head of the machine translation research group at the Computing Center of the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China from 1981 to 1985. The main task of this research group was to use computers for translating scientific and technical literature in the field of metallurgy, establishing an English-Chinese machine translation system for metallurgical literature. Machine translation should indeed become an integral part of scientific translation.
