The book also includes a large number of demonstration works. Rich in content and richly illustrated, it is highly targeted and practical, making it suitable as a beginner's textbook for sketching. Learning the art of shaping, one must first learn sketching because sketching is the foundation of shaping, the basic skill of this discipline. The quality of basic skills directly affects future artistic shaping and creation. It can be said that: sketching is both the foundation and the forefront of the art of shaping. The problem sketching needs to solve is the shaping of forms. As is well known, in natural space, we can not only see but also touch actual objects. These objects are physical forms with height, width, and depth, existing in three-dimensional space, which is a tactile space. On a flat piece of paper, there are only two dimensions—height and width—without depth. In a painting, we can see not only the shape of an object but also its volume, which is an artistic form. This is the object thickness and spatial sense depicted according to visual requirements. The empty space is the visual space. In this sense, objects depicted in a painting, no matter how realistic they may appear or how similar they are to natural space objects, only create realism and are merely an artistic reproduction of physical forms. Then, to reflect the sense of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional sheet of paper, sketching must not only address the problem of shape (height and width) but also solve the problem of volume (depth). This requires correct thinking methods, substantial understanding and perception, holistic and observational approaches, and rich expressive techniques.
