Features: Zhang Daqian (1899–1983), styled Ailian, was known as Daqian. He was a native of Neijiang, Sichuan. A renowned modern Chinese painter, art educator, art theorist, calligrapher, litterateur, collector, gourmet, and traveler, Zhang Daqian became a celebrated cultural figure both in China and abroad due to his profound cultural erudition and legendary life experiences. He was one of the most influential and captivating art masters of the 20th-century Chinese art scene. Zhang Daqian achieved extraordinary accomplishments in painting, not only due to his rich artistic practice and genius, but also because he successfully navigated the relationship between tradition and modernity, inheritance and renewal in art. In his early years, he studied dyeing and weaving in Japan with his brother Zhang Shanmei and later returned to Shanghai to focus on painting and calligraphy. He studied under Li Ruqing and Zeng Xi, and later extensively copied ancient masterpieces, particularly those of Shitao and Ba Da, capturing their essence. Rigorous training in traditional Chinese painting techniques honed his exceptional mastery of traditional skills. In the 1940s, he spent two and a half years immersed in the Dunhuang caves, meticulously copying numerous murals and drawing immense artistic nourishment from them. In the 1950s, Zhang Daqian resided abroad in places like Brazil and the United States for over two decades, where he held exhibitions in Europe and America. His firsthand exposure to the essence of Western classical art, especially his engagement with then-popular art movements like Impressionism and Cubism, marked a turning point in his artistic style. Using techniques like ink splashing and color splashing, he achieved a unique effect of large-scale, wet, flowing ink and color with strong contrasts. Even in these romantic, modern-inspired works, the strong lines and bold ink textures of traditional Chinese painting remained subtly present, seamlessly blending classical Chinese techniques and artistic spirit with modern international styles. This paved a successful path for Chinese painting. This book compiles over 140 of Zhang Daqian's masterpieces, providing a detailed introduction to his life and artistic journey. It also includes some of his own essays on art, a chronology of his life, and excerpts from reviews of his works by various critics, offering a comprehensive portrayal of this great artistic genius and his personal charm.
