For junior high school students, English is a very important subject. In English exams, reading comprehension is one of the main question types, accounting for about 40% of the exam paper, with a trend of increasing weight annually. The Full-Time Secondary School English Teaching Syllabus states, "To improve students' English reading skills, relying solely on textbook passages is far from sufficient. It is necessary to guide students to read a certain number of supplementary materials outside the classroom according to their grade level and specific circumstances." The recently issued New Curriculum Standards also clearly specify the content of reading in English teaching: junior high school students should read appropriate supplementary materials after mastering textbook knowledge, while ensuring that the content is healthy, ( -), diverse in themes and genres, and varies in structure. The emphasis is on reading materials that are highly ideological, entertaining, informative, culturally rich, challenging, and contemporary. One purpose of this is to encourage students to expand their thinking, broaden their horizons, and cultivate innovative and practical abilities, ultimately improving their language skills and laying a solid foundation for transitioning to quality-oriented education.
To better adapt to this transformation and help students master and accumulate more language knowledge, improve their reading comprehension, and further develop their innovative and practical abilities, we have organized experienced frontline English teachers with years of teaching experience. Guided by the spirit of the Full-Time Secondary School English Teaching Syllabus and the New Curriculum Standards, we have meticulously compiled the "Categorized English Reading" series for junior high school students. The guiding principles for the first and second grades fully reflect the cultivation of basic knowledge and skills, while the third grade, while emphasizing the basics, appropriately aligns with the junior high school entrance exam. For students preparing for the junior high school entrance exam, this book serves as both a reading resource and a preparation guide, enabling readers to achieve twice the result with half the effort.
The "Categorized English Reading" junior high school series features the following:
1. Moderate length. With limited vocabulary and knowledge, appropriately lengthed reading materials can cultivate students' reading skills and interest.
2. Graded reading. Each reading passage has a different difficulty level, generally increasing progressively, and continuously expands students' knowledge and reading skills in a step-by-step manner.
3. Diverse themes. Reading materials include not only introductions to characters, humorous stories, social culture, scientific knowledge, daily life, and historical and literary knowledge but also fables, human geography, and more.
4. Authenticity. Most reading materials are adapted from original foreign texts to meet the reading requirements of Chinese junior high school students, helping them better understand and appreciate.
5. Strong timeliness. Reading materials reflect contemporary characteristics, align with the interests and needs of junior high school students, and maintain a feature of staying synchronized with the times.
Of course, despite our efforts to meet readers' needs, this series has certain shortcomings. We sincerely hope that teachers and students will provide valuable feedback.
