The United States must make a historic choice: whether to be the master of the world or its leader? This book argues that U.S. hegemony and the broader globalization are the most significant realities of today's world, as well as the root causes of many of its most difficult problems. The unprecedented strength of the United States in history is the ultimate guarantee of global security, yet Americans now feel less secure than before. Global interdependence and widespread human awakening have solidified the United States' dominant position, but they have also fueled anti-American jealousy, incited resentment toward the U.S., and enabled its enemies to enhance their power by proliferating more destructive technologies. This book warns Americans not to be blinded by hegemony. The security and prosperity of the United States are intertwined with those of the world. Panicked focus on U.S. security alone, obsession with terrorism, and indifference to political instability elsewhere cannot strengthen U.S. security or meet the true needs of leadership. Unless the United States can align its formidable power with its attractive yet often chaotic social aid, it will find itself isolated and vulnerable in an increasingly chaotic global environment.
The Grand Choice points out that the United States stands at a crossroads, facing an urgent strategic choice: it must serve as both a guarantor of global security and a catalyst for global prosperity.
