Features: Lu Yin (1898-1934), a female novelist. Originally named Huang Shuyi, she was from Fuzhou, Fujian Province. She graduated from Beijing Normal School for Women in 1916 and studied at Beijing Women's Higher Normal School in 1919. In 1921, she began writing novels and joined the Literary Research Association. Her works primarily focus on the love and marriage of young people, with female intellectuals as the main characters. Some depict their pursuit of love, others portray the pain caused by unhappy marriages, while others explore their pessimism, frustration, awakening, and pursuit in the conflict between ideals and reality, reason and emotion. The novel Old Friends by the Sea is Lu Yin's masterpiece. The work depicts five young women—Lu Sha and others—who are innocent and romantic, weaving a future utopia with their fantasies. Lu Sha, as a child, did not receive much love from her parents and faced discrimination at a church school. Her pursuit of love failed, and she had only a few close friends who could not stay together long, leading her to deeply feel the loneliness of the world and the misfortune of life, which made her emotionally sensitive and pessimistic. The entire novel seems to be woven with a sensitive woman and countless tears, exuding a powerful emotional impact. Lu Yin's novels often have a confessional nature, frequently using letters and diaries to directly reveal the characters' emotions, giving them the characteristics of lyrical fiction. These novels, filled with melancholic emotions, genuinely reflect the intellectual situation of those seeking a path after the May Fourth Movement, also bearing the imprint of ideological changes during the decline of the May Fourth Movement.
