The team resolutely headed north to Beijing and Nanjing for assistance, faced the illness of a capable helper, endured the hardships of working at the Ejina meteorological station, and witnessed the tragic suicide of the Chinese student Ma Yeqian in Hulna. These thrilling or (twisting) plots paint a vivid and realistic picture of the Chinese frontier and the interior during 1928–1931 for the readers.
