Features: This dictionary is primarily intended for middle school (including vocational high school) Chinese teachers and students to teach and study ancient Chinese literature and poetry, as well as for young adults in society and readers with a medium level of education to learn and read ancient Chinese literature and poetry. The term "ancient Chinese literature and poetry" here covers a broader scope than the commonly understood "ancient Chinese works." It includes not only the classical texts of the pre-Qin and Han dynasties but also the classical Chinese prose and rhyming literature written from the Tang and Song dynasties to the modern era, as well as some classical literary masterpieces based on ancient vernacular Chinese. However, reading and studying works in the ancient vernacular system is relatively easier, so the scope of this dictionary is still primarily focused on reading and studying ancient Chinese works.
The term "common" here considers three aspects of practicality: , the scope of application is common. This means that the ancient Chinese literature and poetry covered in the content are as common as possible, and the writing is designed to cater to a broader readership. Second, the selection of characters is based on the commonly used characters in ancient Chinese literature and poetry. Uncommon, difficult, or obscure characters are not included; commonly used characters that appear only in specific works (such as the Book of Documents or certain Dunhuang) are generally also excluded. Third, the definitions focus on the common meanings or common usage of commonly used characters in ancient Chinese literature and poetry. The uncommon meanings or uncommon usage of some commonly used characters are generally not included, nor are the common meanings identical to modern Chinese or the common usage of function words.
