Features: Since the Qin and Han dynasties, each successive dynasty's Taoist hermits and imperial physicians have contributed their ancestral and inherited treasures of longevity and health preservation to the imperial courts. These treasures and secrets were so closely guarded that even high-ranking court officials and eunuchs found it difficult to access or understand them. Those emperors who studied and adhered to these teachings enjoyed health and longevity, while those who neglected or defied them often fell ill and died prematurely. The Chinese medicinal sage, Li Shizhen of the Ming Dynasty, devoted his entire life to studying medical classics and exploring famous mountains and rivers, compiling Bencao Gangmu, which stands as the pinnacle of Chinese medicine. This work is widely known among the people. The extraordinary talent, Gao Lian of the Ming Dynasty, dedicated himself to the art of longevity, visited hermits and renowned physicians, and spent his life compiling Zunsheng Babian, truly the pinnacle of court longevity practices in Chinese history. Yet, few people are aware of this work. Before the 21st century, the Chinese people were still struggling for basic subsistence, so Zunsheng Babian remained unknown, while Bencao Gangmu was the only work most people knew. At the dawn of the 21st century, China gradually entered a well-off society, and people no longer needed to know Bencao Gangmu, but inevitably began to value Zunsheng Babian. Zunsheng Babian is destined to become the household classic of Chinese well-off society in the 21st century—a specialized work on longevity.
Zunsheng Babian was written by Gao Lian of the Ming Dynasty and published in the year 1591. It consists of twenty volumes, divided into eight sections: Qingxiu Miao Lun Jian (Essays on Cultivating Virtue), Sishi Tiashuo Jian (Essays on Adjusting the Four Seasons), Quebing Yannian Jian (Essays on Dispelling Illness and Prolonging Life), Jushi Anle Jian (Essays on Daily Life and Comfort), Yinxuan Fushi Jian (Essays on Drinking and Eating), Lingmi Danyao Jian (Essays on Spiritual and Secret Medicines), Yanxian Qingshang Jian (Essays on Leisurely Enjoyments), and Chuxian Xiaoju Jian (Essays on Transcending the World).
This book is a comprehensive and practical work on longevity, one of the main documents of ancient Chinese longevity studies. The content is extremely rich, emphasizing the cultivation of body and qi, advocating "nourishing qi to preserve the spirit" and "moving the body to dispel illness," and promoting practices such as prenatal breathing and guiding exercises. In terms of daily life, he proposed principles such as seeking tranquility and contentment, choosing suitable living environments, preserving morning and evening well-being, enjoying leisurely excursions in nature, recognizing the avoidance of harm in the universe, and maintaining strict relationships with friends. In terms of diet, he emphasized the nourishment of the spleen and stomach, advocating a simple and light diet to cultivate the spleen and stomach's qi and support the source of transformation. These perspectives hold significant guiding meaning for longevity practices.
This book is compiled based on the Ming Dynasty's classic work Zunsheng Babian. It collects and organizes nearly a thousand ancient Chinese spiritual and qi cultivation texts, disease prevention methods, and longevity practices. It teaches people how to achieve external harmony and internal balance, clear the spirit and unblock the channels, transcend worldly concerns, and extend life by following the changes of the four seasons' yin and yang, coordinating the five organs' cold and warmth, absorbing the essence of nature, and creating a sublime spiritual realm. The book's integration of Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist thought methods, as well as its combination of qigong, alchemy, and art, makes it a classic work of ancient Chinese longevity theory and practice.
