In the early days of the Anti-Japanese War, Hezhong Baiyangdian area, Communist Party member He Lao Cai mobilized the peasants to organize the Anti-Japanese Self-Defense Corps, and the young farmer Niudaishui actively participated. He Lao Cai's young sister Yang Xiaomei, unable to endure her husband Jin Xinglong's abuse, fled to her brother-in-law's place and joined the revolution. She was arranged to attend the county training class and got along very well with Niudaishui, who was also studying there. Under Yang Xiaomei's persuasion, Jin Xinglong initially reluctantly complied with the anti-Japanese cause but later reverted to his old habits and joined the traitor He Shixiong. As a result, Yang Xiaomei broke off ties with him. During the anti-"sweeping" battle, Niudaishui and Yang Xiaomei were captured, and Yang Xiaomei managed to escape with injuries. Niudaishui was severely tortured by He Shixiong and Jin Xinglong to protect the militia Gao Tuncer. After Gao Tuncer was rescued, he captured He Shixiong's son and used him as a hostage to exchange for Niudaishui. Niudaishui and Yang Xiaomei reunited again to recuperate from their injuries, and their bond deepened. After recovering, they joined the battle under He Lao Cai's leadership. Later, Niudaishui led the Anti-Japanese Self-Defense Corps to capture the traitors He Shixiong and Jin Xinglong.
