Features: From the founding of the People's Republic of China to 1966, it was a peak period for the creation and publication of long novels in China. Over a decade, numerous works were produced, among which dozens had a wide impact and reached great heights. These works adhered to the principles of socialist realism, using heartfelt enthusiasm and a simple yet profound style to celebrate the arduous struggles and vibrant spirit of the Chinese people during different historical periods, including the War of Liberation, the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the Liberation War, and the construction of socialism. They represented the highest achievements of long novel creation during that period and hold an extremely important position in the history of contemporary Chinese literature. With their unique charm, they have influenced generations of readers and have stood the test of time. To present a more complete picture of the development of contemporary long novels and the state of long novel creation during that era, we have specially compiled and published the "Collected Works of Contemporary Chinese Long Novels" series.
1. The series is based on the "Selected Works of Long Novels" published by our press in the 1950s and 1960s and the "Red Classics" series published in the 1990s, aiming to include as many outstanding works as possible.
2. The works in the series were published roughly between 1949 and 1965, though some multi-volume works have publication processes that extend beyond this period.
3. Due to various reasons, some works have had multiple revised editions. For this publication, we have selected the best versions and conducted proofreading by referring to other editions.
The Genesis of a Revolution follows the development history of the mutual-aid group led by Liang Shengbao, depicting the sharp and complex struggles among different classes and strata in Hama Village. Through this, it profoundly portrays the new changes, rearrangements, and combinations in rural class relations and interpersonal dynamics during China's socialist transformation of agriculture. It provides a complete picture of the historical features of agricultural cooperation in China and the profound transformation in the spiritual world of the peasant masses, especially their shift in stance and emotions toward private ownership left over from centuries. In essence, the history of agricultural cooperatives is also the history of the hearts of those who dared to start anew. This is the reason for the novel's enduring vitality.
Liu Qing lived in Huangfu Village for 14 years, thoroughly understanding the various characters in rural life, which provided him with exceptional advantages in creating vivid characters. In The Genesis of a Revolution, the author successfully portrays a group of highly compelling figures, including Liang Shengbao, Liang Sanlao, Guo Shifu, Guo Shijie, and Guo Zhenshan. Among them, Liang Shengbao and Liang Sanlao are ranked among the most distinctive typical figures in modern Chinese literature.
Liang Shengbao is the central character of the novel, embodying the heroic prototype of the socialist countryside. In pioneering the great socialist cause, he is both bold and wise, possessing both grand vision and a spirit of practical action. He reflects both the shining virtues of traditional Chinese values—hard work, simplicity, and kindness—as well as the spirit of the era that prioritizes the collective over personal gain and. He is a true socialist new person, one who upholds principles while being deeply relatable and endearing to readers.
Liang Sanlao is one of the most profound and brilliant characters in the novel, an extremely compelling artistic prototype. The author does not portray him in a single dimension but delves deeply, using rich and vivid brushstrokes to depict his complex inner world and multifaceted personality. He is an invaluable figure of an elderly Chinese peasant, revealing the depth of the author's artistic potential.
The structure of The Genesis of a Revolution is grand and majestic, fully showcasing Liu Qing's powerful and vigorous artistic style. Its language is simple yet profound; the appropriately placed lyrical passages linger in the reader's memory like, making it a masterpiece of modern literature.
