From the founding of the People's Republic of China to 1966, it was a peak period for the creation and publication of Chinese long novels. Over a decade, a large number of works were produced, among which dozens had a widespread influence and reached the height of their time. These works adhered to the principles of socialist realism, using heartfelt enthusiasm and simple artistic expression to celebrate the arduous struggles and vibrant spirit of the Chinese people during different historical periods, including the Land Revolution War, the War of Resistance Against Japan, the War of Liberation, and the construction of socialism. They represent the highest achievements of Chinese long novel creation during that period and hold an extremely important position in the history of contemporary Chinese literature. With their unique charm, they have influenced generations of readers and have endured the test of time to this day.
The novel follows the historical struggles between the three generations of the Zhu Laozhong and Yan Zhihe families and the two generations of the Feng Laolan family as its main thread, depicting the anti-head tax movement and the Baoding No. 2 Normal School student uprising under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. It artistically summarizes the class struggles and revolutionary movements in rural and urban areas of northern China before and after the Great Revolution, reflecting the historical process of the Chinese peasant revolution from spontaneous resistance to organized struggle. In revealing the peasant issue of the Chinese democratic revolution and the relationship between peasants and the democratic revolution led by the Communist Party, it achieves both breadth and depth that can be considered a culmination of novels reflecting peasant issues since the May Fourth Movement. It not only truthfully portrays the changes in the history of the motherland and the evolution of peasant hearts but also recreates the path of Chinese peasants toward revolution, summarizing the historical experience of peasant class struggles over the past two thousand years. It vividly illustrates that only under the correct leadership of the Communist Party of China, when peasants organize and fight, can they achieve victory. It is precisely this point that reveals the essential characteristics of the democratic revolution and achieves a harmonious combination of the breadth of life and the depth of thought in its reflection of the history of the New Democratic Revolution.
