Features: Epidemiology (Fifth Edition), primarily used for teaching undergraduate students in preventive medicine. Based on a thorough summary and analysis of the fourth edition and extensive discussion of internationally popular new textbooks, the editorial committee of the fifth edition has reached the following consensus in the writing of this edition: (1) Adhere to the writing principles of the fourth edition and maintain its basic framework; (2) Prioritize general principles and supplement them with specific discussions; (3) Adjust the introduction order in the general section according to international practices, starting with cohort studies before moving to case-control studies; (4) In response to the frequent occurrence of public health emergencies, a new chapter on emergency epidemiology has been added; (5) To address emerging public health issues, three new chapters—mental health epidemiology, evidence-based medicine, and pharmaceutical epidemiology—have been added to the general section's sub-sections, enabling students to gain insights into some of the latest developments in epidemiology. In addition to content updates and the aforementioned new chapters, we have specially invited Professor Tang Jinling from the Department of Community and Family Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, to contribute to this edition. He not only wrote the chapter on evidence-based medicine as a distinguished Changjiang Scholar and Director of the Evidence-Based Medicine Center at Peking University but also provided English abstracts for each chapter, making it easier for students to engage with and learn professional foreign language content.
