Late at night, a lonely young man walks down the streets of Paris and is knocked down by a lake-green Fiat car. He gets into the police car with the driver, a woman named Jacqueline Brossard, and is taken to the hospital. When he regains consciousness, he finds himself alone in a clinic, the woman gone, and he has received a sum of money. To uncover the truth, after leaving the clinic, he begins to search for and investigate the woman based on an uncertain address, with the lake-green Fiat becoming the most important clue in his pursuit. This woman reminds him of another woman, and the lake-green Fiat reminds him of a small truck. The entire search process is also a process of reminiscence. The novel depicts the young man, as he searches, recalling fragments of his early life and re-examining his past. In the end, he finds Jacqueline Brossard, and everything returns to normal.
