Features: The Edo period of Japan was a flourishing garden where a variety of popular literary works catering to commoners like townspeople emerged. Among them, the Hyakumonogatari (One Hundred Stories of the Floating World) holds the most representative position. It has a close relationship with the novels of China's Ming and Qing dynasties, as it was influenced by the vernacular novels of that era. Therefore, when we read it, we feel particularly familiar with it, and we can see the long-standing cultural exchange between China and Japan. At the same time, we also deeply admire the Japanese people's skill in absorbing foreign cultures and adapting them to create uniquely distinctive national cultures, which is something we can learn from. The author translated and published the monumental work of Hyakumonogatari by Kyokutei Bakin in the early 1990s—the Nankō Ichiro Hachikyu Monogatari, with approximately two million words—and it was well-received by readers. In 1998, I published the book Japanese Hyakumonogatari and Ming-Qing Novels, which comprehensively introduces the origins and development of the Hyakumonogatari.
