Features: You might not know Henry James, but you certainly know William James, the pragmatist philosopher. Henry was William's younger brother. The elder brother devoted himself to philosophy, becoming the founder and main representative of American pragmatism, while the younger brother traveled the world, becoming a traveler and novelist. They grew up in a wealthy family, and the family's prosperity contributed to their careers. Henry was drawn to the ancient European civilization from a young age and frequently traveled between the East and the West. Since 1875, he settled in London, living there for nearly half a century and eventually becoming a British citizen. Whenever he traveled to a place in Britain, he would enthusiastically write standalone travel essays, totaling 16. In 1905, these essays were compiled into a book titled English Traits; this is the book we read today. Henry's travel essays are regarded as classics in the history of world literature, and English Traits is considered the masterpiece of his series of travel works. Since its publication, the book has remained best-selling. This book is Henry's highest praise for Britain. Henry traveled not for money, not for novelty, not for pleasure, but purely out of interest, to satisfy his own eyes. The essays he wrote this way are truly expressions of his genuine feelings. He left his homeland and wandered in foreign lands only to witness the various kinds of human suffering with his own eyes, reminding people that toil, hardship, hunger, sorrow, and squalor are the universal fate of humanity. Henry's gaze is sharp, and his words carry a touch of self-deprecation. Henry regarded travel as an art. In his youth, he described himself as a "sentimental traveler"; in middle age, he was seen as a "very observant foreigner," preferring to view everything from an American perspective; in old age, he no longer considered himself a "bystander," and the term "foreigner" had merely become a superficial label. Henry traveled to Britain in three different stages of his life. In this English Traits, we can read the inner monologues of three "travelers" with different temperaments.
