Features: During the War of Resistance against Japan, soldier Sun Zhijian entrusts his friend Jiang Hong to escort his wife Xue Bingru to Wuhan before going to the front. Later, when Nanjing falls, Zhijian's fate is unknown, and Bingru gradually develops feelings for Jiang Hong, wanting to marry him. Jiang Hong, valuing loyalty above all, politely refuses. Zhijian survives the Nanjing Massacre after personally experiencing it, but Bingru has lost all feelings for him, and the two divorce. Bingru continues to pursue Jiang Hong. Faced with the vast East River flowing eastward, the two friends make their choices. After the Nanjing Massacre, Zhang Henshu submitted a petition to the government, requesting to join the guerrilla war at his own expense, but finding no way to volunteer, he poured his intense patriotic passion and solitary indignation onto paper.
