Features: "My Education Stories" is a series edited by the renowned contemporary educator and psychologist Zhu Yongxin, who is also a scholar of education, research in education, and administration in education. This series is part of the "New Education Library" and consists of 5 books: "Walking on the Path of Education," "Stories from Education Online," "Spicy Students, Cool Teachers," "Guarding the Days of Senior High," and "Magical Composition Camp." Published by Fujian Education Press in January 2005, it is a true Chinese "educational narrative research."
Educational narrative research involves teachers recording their teaching processes from a unique perspective, narrating their educational stories, and improving teaching efficiency and professional development through continuous reflection. Its main characteristics are narrative and reflective:
- Narrative: Teachers, as the subjects of educational narrative research, describe specific teaching events, requiring a certain degree of plot and readability.
- Reflective: Teachers improve their educational practice through continuous reflection, enriching and enhancing their practical and theoretical research capabilities, thereby promoting professional development.
Educational narrative research is closely aligned with teachers' educational lives and is the most direct and effective form of action-oriented teaching research. The "My Education Stories" series from the "New Education Library" genuinely records vivid and real educational stories that take place under the "New Education Experiment."
In September 2002, Zhu Yongxin launched the "New Education Experiment" with the mission of "pursuing ideals and reviving humanism" at Yu Feng Experimental School in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. The "New Education Experiment" system primarily includes five core beliefs: believing in students' potential, valuing their mental state, creating success experiences, emphasizing individual development, and focusing on specialized education. Over the six years of primary school education, it integrates six major actions such as "building a bookish campus," "teachers and students writing diaries together," "listening to the outside world," "proficiently using bilingual education," "building a digital community," and "creating specialized schools" to achieve the educational philosophy of "human-centered, student-oriented, leveraging strengths, addressing weaknesses, and harmonious development."
To cultivate children's basic skills in "seeing, hearing, reading, writing, and calculating," the "New Education Experiment" not only completes basic curriculum teaching but also imposes additional requirements. The basic idea is to tailor education to each student's interests, use advanced teaching facilities, and, under the guidance of professional teachers, develop their talents in science, art, aesthetics, and literature, making every student feel like a genius and striving to excel.
Over two years, the experiment has expanded to over 200 schools in more than 20 provinces and cities across the country. Many media outlets and education professionals have called it a potential "New Hope Project," following the success of the "Hope Project," if it withstands the test of time and space.
Zhu Yongxin also founded the Education Online website (www.eduol.com.cn) with the mission of "building a spiritual home for Chinese teachers." It proposed a new development paradigm of "expert guidance, online mutual assistance, and self-reflection." In just over two years, it attracted over 80,000 frontline primary and secondary school teachers and education media professionals from 21 provinces and cities, becoming an important carrier and development platform for the "New Education Experiment" and a true "online teachers' university."
Inspired by the "New Education" philosophy and guided by renowned educators such as Li Zhenxi, Dou Guimei, and Lu Zhiwen, many teachers' passion for education was ignited, their potential was unlocked, and their educational philosophy was elevated.
"I can't give up Education Online; I can't sever my online bonds," as told in one of the series, "Stories from Education Online," narrates moving stories that took place in this virtual space, inspiring readers and prompting deep reflection.
"Spicy Students, Cool Teachers," written by the young and renowned teacher Su Jing, is a heartfelt diary of education that combines the survival of the new generation of teachers, the new teacher-student relationship, and the expression of educational individuality. With dazzling scenes, bold themes, and light, flowing prose, the book showcases "spicy students and cool teachers" from primary to university levels, across mainland China and Hong Kong. The youthful energy and extraordinary educational philosophy complement each other, while the inspiration that transcends time and space contrasts with scattered memory fragments. The author is both recording a soulful journey and planning the next one, allowing every educator immersed in the book to understand and enjoy the extraordinary charm of "New Education."
"Guarding the Days of Senior High" adopts a detailed narrative style, introducing a common educator in Shenzhen's special economic zone who pursues academic achievement while upholding educational philosophy in senior high education. It highlights meaningful details and contexts, reflecting typical teaching events, and authentically describes the author's confusion, psychological struggles, and reflections while navigating the gap between exam-oriented education and ideal education.
"Magical Composition Camp" uses poetic language to introduce the author's explorations in composition teaching reform, which hold practical operational significance and broad reference value. Told in the form of a story, it shares the author's new insights and reflections on composition teaching, making it relatable, fresh, and inspiring teachers to feel the emotional appeal of composition teaching and discover effective methods to motivate students.
The "My Education Stories" series is also an "action research" of the "New Education Experiment," recording its exploration and the brilliance of "New Education."
"Walking on the Path of Education" records Zhu Yongxin's experiences as an "educational mayor" who studies, researches, and administers education. He frequently conducts educational surveys during his travels, reflects deeply, and seeks the essence and brilliance of education from different "educational landscapes," identifies current issues in education, and writes reports with experts to discuss China's educational challenges.
"My Education Stories" is so compelling because the authors live and act compellingly! They have walked the path of growth, composed the melody of life with their hearts, and painted this magnificent journey of education with their thoughts. Let us read "My Education Stories" with our hearts! With heartfelt reading, we will understand what growth is, and feel passion and life!
Teachers are theers of culture and the guardians of the soul. In the vast ocean of knowledge, they navigate and share with students. Navigating requires environment and climate. As the saying goes: "Timing is less important than location, and location is less important than harmony." Navigating also requires everyone's united effort. On the same boat, they support each other, sail together in harmony, and enjoy the journey—how delightful!
On this boat, the captain and passengers are of one heart and one purpose, working together without discord, with mutual care. The days on the boat are filled with warmth, and even after passengers disembark, they leave memories of sailing together through storms.
When the sky changes suddenly, the water becomes turbulent, or the boat faces danger, life is not always smooth sailing. But here is a haven for the soul, a place to pour out your heart; when facing difficulties, hold my hand, and we will move forward together. On sunny days, I will silently share the beauty with you; when the mountains are in full bloom, I will show a relieved smile.
The days of senior high are worth remembering and savoring. Let us work together, with your heart, actions, strength, and perseverance, to create the brilliance of senior high. I am willing to witness your every word and deed with my clumsy fingers, to type out our bitter yet brilliant senior high life!
