In the Yuan Dynasty, the sanqu (qu) spread rapidly across the southern and northern regions in an extremely short period, becoming one of the most representative artistic treasures in Chinese literature. During that time, renowned masters emerged one after another, producing masterpieces like Guan Hanqing, Bai Pu, Ma Zhiyuan, Zhang Yanghao, Qiao Ji, and Zhang Keliu, among others. Whether it was the elite or the common people, the sound of sanqu could be heard everywhere, with its verses being enjoyed and appreciated by all. Qu (a form of Chinese lyric poetry) became a widely popular literary genre, presenting a flourishing scene that was suitable for all ages and continued to be celebrated.
Sanqu draws from a wide range of sources and has a free form, making it the peak of rhyming literature. It is more straightforward and candid, more popular, and allows for greater freedom in expression, filled with the unrestrained spirit of the people. Its artistic conception is also more open and fresh.
From a content perspective, the sanqu fully reflects the Yuan Dynasty qu poets' pursuit of freedom...
