When Tao Yuanming served as the magistrate of Pengze County, his superior, the inspector of the post office, came to inspect official affairs. Officials holding the post of inspector were often very tyrannical, and Tao Yuanming despised such harmful and corrupt individuals. However, as he was in the office, he had no choice but to comply. So, he went in casual attire to the inspection.
A worldly-wise county clerk quickly stepped forward to remind him to wear official attire, saying, "You should tie your belt and meet him." Tao Yuanming, however, refused to pander and said indignantly, "How could I bow my waist for five bushels of rice to a petty local official!" He then took off his official hat and resigned, returning to his hometown.
"More than ten acres of farmland, eight or nine thatched houses," the peaceful and tranquil life in the countryside brought Tao Yuanming unprecedented freedom and clarity to his heart. He drank, composed poetry, and picked chrysanthemums under the eastern fence, living a contented and joyful life...
