The Pre-Qin period was an era of the second leap in the of thought, an age of sages and enlightenment, where the demand for creativity and artistic expression in writing began to emerge. Zuo Zhuan was the first among these historical texts to respond to the evolving needs of history, setting an excellent example for historical prose.
-Zuo Zhuan, originally titled Zuo Shi Chunqiu, was later paired with Chunqiu as a commentary on the classics, known as Chunqiu Zuo Shi Zhuan, and abbreviated as Zuo Zhuan. Together with Gongyang Zhuan and Guliang Zhuan, it is collectively referred to as the "Three Commentaries on the Spring and Autumn Annals." However, Gongyang Zhuan and Guliang Zhuan interpret Chunqiu purely through textual analysis, whereas Zuo Zhuan is essentially an independently written historical work.
-Zuo Zhuan was compiled around the early Warring States period. According to Sima Qian, it was written by Zuo Qiuming, a native of Lu, but this has long been debated.
