Features: This is an academic (short essay). It interprets the nicknames of famous figures throughout history, aiming to enrich the historical and cultural knowledge of middle and high school students, enhance their humanities literacy, and inspire their love for national culture. The nicknames of famous figures explained in this book are not self-proclaimed titles, such as Tao Yuanming's self-designation as "Master of the Five Willow Trees"; nor are they fictional character nicknames, such as Li Kui's "Wind-Blown Storm" title in Water Margin. Instead, they are unique and widely recognized titles bestowed upon these figures by contemporaries. Nicknames are an interesting cultural phenomenon. They not only reflect the talent, character, and moral integrity of the individuals but also, through them, reveal certain political conditions, social customs, national psychology, aesthetic trends, and value judgments of the time. Some are commendatory, some are derogatory, and some are neutral, serving as objective descriptions or introductions, but all carry distinct ideological and cultural connotations, serving as windows into ancient Chinese society and culture. The historical figures selected in this book range from the pre-Qin period to the Qing Dynasty, with representatives from each dynasty. The fields covered include politics, economics, military, philosophy, literature, art, and interdisciplinary areas. The sources are drawn from official histories, personal notes, poetry and lyric commentaries, collected essays, and individual author anthologies, all well-documented in the literature. There is no trendy fictionalization, and all references are clearly annotated in the text.
