Introduction to Writing Studies

Features: Guangxian's On the Theory of Writing remains a "trinity." From the perspective of the systematic approach of proposing, analyzing, and solving problems, this manuscript can be considered a sister piece to his A Study on the Classification of Chinese Articles, both equally groundbreaking, self-established, and refreshing. This immediately brings to mind over a decade ago. Back then, Guangxian was transferred to our department and began teaching writing courses. Thus, I developed some attention toward him as an older mentor to a younger colleague: On one hand, I had once taught writing courses and had some personal insights into them, so I wanted to see how he would teach. On the other hand, I had always believed that teaching writing courses was a tedious and unfulfilling task for a university teacher, and I wondered how long he would last. However, I must admit that even though I consider myself somewhat persistent, I eventually grew weary of teaching writing courses and have long held some disdain for what is now called "writing studies."
