Self-Cultivation: Throughout history, those who achieved great things all started with setting their goals. How did Zeng Guofan vow to complete the Confucian ideal of "Inner Sage, Outer King"? He began with self-cultivation and eventually brought peace to the world. He regarded the "Five Notes on Self-Cultivation" as the key to perfecting himself and followed their principles throughout his life. From this, he derived many secrets for dealing with people and situations, such as "Speak cautiously," "Conceal your strengths and reveal your weaknesses," "Balance firmness and flexibility," and "Retire after achieving success." These secrets enabled him to excel in official circles and stand unharmed in the whirlpool of power struggles.
Family Management: Zeng Guofan inherited the tradition of farming and studying, with a strict family atmosphere. He strictly followed the Confucian steps of self-cultivation, family management, governance, and world peace to build his career. Thus, he deeply understood that family management was the foundation for success. He used the legendary "Eight-character maxim" as the guiding principle, combined with the specific norms of "Three Approaches to Attainment," and established the "Eight-Basis Hall" as the framework for managing his family. As a result, parents were kind to children, brothers were harmonious, and couples were loving, allowing him to face challenges without worries.
Governing the State: Zeng Guofan served as an official for decades, adhering to the principles of integrity, humility, patience, caution, and stability in office, as well as avoiding arrogance, greed, and deceit. These principles remain relevant to how people conduct themselves today. Zeng Guofan's greatest contribution to the late Qing Dynasty was nurturing and shaping a large number of talents, including Li Hongzhang, Huahengfang, Rong Hong, and Li Shanlan, all of whom were his disciples. His long experience in recognizing and utilizing people led to valuable insights in talent selection and assessment, which are still applicable to modern human resource management.
Bringing Peace to the World: Zeng Guofan organized militia units, trained the Xiang Army, suppressed the Taiping Rebellion, and handled the Tianjin. He constantly struggled to survive in tight circumstances. Despite being a Confucian scholar, he commanded thousands of armored troops, "following his lead." Why? It was due to his generous pay and the spirit of "restoring Confucian values." Zeng Guofan deeply understood the importance of public opinion, so while suppressing the Taiping Army, he also comforted the people and reformed local governance. Nevertheless, he could not shake off the historical stigma of being known as "Zeng the Hair-clipper" or save the fate of the late Qing Dynasty's collapse. However, "supporting a collapsing edifice" was ultimately in line with his ambition to "clarify the world."
Regardless, his merits and demerits will be judged by future generations.
