Chen Hongshou was born into a scholarly family in Zhejiang. His early life was quite affluent, and he was fond of wine, beauty, and enjoying nature. He also sought official positions but failed in the examinations repeatedly. From a young age, he studied painting and calligraphy, showing exceptional talent and a penchant for innovation. The famous mountains and rivers he traveled to were depicted in his works with grandeur and uniqueness, differing from others. He was truly "a chest full of mountains and rivers" while "all phenomena were distinct." Chen Hongshou was renowned alongside Cui Zizhong, a Northern figure painter, and they were known as "Chen from the South and Cui from the North." His representative works include "Nurturing Yue in the Palace," "Elegant Gathering," "Hundred Butterflies," and more.
