Features: For over a century, Peking University has always been a gathering place for outstanding talents and renowned scholars. They are experts in their fields, each possessing unique skills, adept at questioning and innovating, strong and pragmatic, with great vision and profound knowledge. Through the dedicated nurturing of generations of masters, Peking University has formed a commendable campus culture and academic atmosphere. Though intangible, this atmosphere has a profound influence. Lin Yutang, who once taught at Peking University, once said, "I firmly believe that true education is shaped by the atmosphere." He considered the ancient saying of "gentle spring rain nurturing growth" to be the essence of education influenced by such an atmosphere. Peking University's spirit of taking the nation's cause upon itself, upholding freedom of thought, and embracing inclusiveness has nurtured countless scholars and outstanding talents. This intangible yet tangible atmosphere stems from the actions of the masters. To better inherit and carry forward the spirit of these masters in their conduct and scholarship, elevate the development and construction of Peking University to a higher level, and contribute to the advancement of Chinese academia, we have compiled this book, "The Masters of Peking University," to learn from and draw inspiration with our readers. There are hundreds of masters at Peking University, and this small book cannot encompass them all. Here, we present a selection of fifteen, listed in chronological order without regard to nationality, based on their academic contributions. Following the traditional Chinese custom of not compiling biographies of the living, we have included only those who have passed away. The initial list was quite extensive, but the selection was limited by the availability of materials and the authors' capacity to complete the work within the agreed-upon timeframe. For now, these fifteen masters are presented to the readers. Though the number is small, it still reflects the multidisciplinary nature of Peking University. Each master is chosen for their most representative and shining qualities, rather than a comprehensive account, to leave a vivid impression on the readers. If there are shortcomings, they will be addressed in future supplements. The authors of each chapter are either descendants or close disciples of the masters, or well-researched experts. The materials used are thorough and reliable, the writing is clear and engaging, the perspectives are distinct and fresh, making the book enjoyable and enlightening to read. Readers will unconsciously get closer to the masters, appreciating their lofty aspirations, charming personalities, extensive knowledge, and exquisite teaching methods. They will benefit from the enjoyment and gain wisdom through reflection.
