Features: The novel creations of this year show a pleasing and solid trend in depicting rural and local themes. Li Peifu's The Painter Wang and Zhao Defa's Legs uncover moving and touching life essence, reflecting the authors' understanding and compassion for farmers. Black Scenery is a profound and weighty middle that, through a legendary story, employs concise, stern, and incisive satire to portray the subtle psychological changes of every character. Xiong Zhengliang's Leap Year, Liu Qingbang's Old Man Han, Yan Lianke's The Dream of Yao Valley People, Lei Jianzheng's Snow of Last Year, Qiao Dianyun's Fragrance and Fragrance, Chen Yingsong's Weeds, Lü Xin's Daughters of Other Families Wear Flowers, and Chi Zijian's Primitive Scenery reflect the changes in rural life and the impact of reform on the traditional lifestyles of farmers from different eras and perspectives, delving into the deep psychological and character traits of farmers in various circumstances. Zhang Yu's Rural Feelings and Liu Ke's Red Sailboat are also influential works of this year. The latter's representative artistic techniques and the imagery creation of Chu region's customs and culture, as well as the former's inclination to depict the traditional consciousness and customs of Central Plains rural life, both offer much to notice and ponder. In the face of numerous literary journals and overwhelming novel works today, we have compiled "The Best Chinese Novels of the 1990s" annually to help readers grasp the new developments in Chinese fiction creation.
