Features: Sketching plaster sculptures is an indispensable basic course for students in art colleges to learn and train sketching, and also an important component of college entrance examinations. At the same time, studying sketching plaster sculptures serves as a transitional phase for beginners or examinees to move on to sketching human figures. Therefore, learning and mastering the techniques of sketching plaster sculptures is particularly important. The importance of studying sketching plaster lies first in its reflection of structure, proportion, form, value, spatial relationships, and other elements, which are all essential pathways in learning painting. Thus, when studying sketching plaster, the primary goal is to learn to observe, analyze, and study the depicted object as a whole.
Secondly, sketching plaster is an excellent method for beginners to recognize and master objects. In analyzing and understanding the structure and characteristics of objects, plaster sculptures, with their unique white color under fixed lighting, produce subtle value changes. Although they lack complex color relationships, the representation of the three tones—“black, white, gray”——offers beginners an ideal condition for observing the whole, shaping volume, and expressing objects. Correctly distinguishing the relationships among the three tones is the key to learning and mastering sketching.
Furthermore, sketching plaster lays a solid foundation for learning portrait sketching. During the training phase of sketching plaster sculptures, beginners can study without restrictions on environment or time, allowing them to observe, analyze, and express objects from different perspectives and angles for extended periods. At the same time, it helps beginners grasp anatomical knowledge, the structure and transitions of muscles, thereby furthering their study of portrait sketching. From the examination content and requirements of art programs in recent years, sketching holds a very important position, with plaster sculptures accounting for a significant proportion in the tests.
As part of basic education, sketching instruction has been highly valued by the broader art community. The outstanding artistic achievements and accomplishments of numerous outstanding art talents from around the world demonstrate that their sketching skills are deeply rooted, all honed through rigorous practice of fundamentals. Therefore, it is hoped that all beginners will diligently study and practice to fully master sketching techniques. This book introduces the step-by-step process of sketching three classic plaster sculptures: Zeus, Aristophanes, and Brutus.
