Features: The China Custom Academy, Xiamen Custom Academy, and the Research Center for the History of China Customs at Xiamen University jointly held the Theoretical Symposium on Sir Robert Hart and the Old China Customs in Xiamen in September 2003. Professionals and non-professionals from the customs system and higher education institutions actively participated, discussing issues such as the evaluation of Sir Robert Hart, the modern customs system of China, and the non-customs activities in which customs participated. At the end of the conference, President Zhao Guang of the China Custom Academy made a closing summary. The symposium played a positive role in clarifying facts, distinguishing right from wrong, forming consensus, and deepening the research on the history of modern China customs. A total of 38 papers were received for the symposium. After review by the editorial team, 26 papers were selected for publication based on their high ideological and academic standards. Most of the selected papers were published as originally written, with only minor corrections to text or punctuation during editing.
