Features: Most chapters in this book follow a carefully arranged similar structure: 1) Elaborate on the scope and nature of the topic and define it; 2) Introduce the main theories of this topic; 3) Integrate research materials related to the topic and summarize the accumulated knowledge; 4) Present several examples of how to apply this knowledge in environmental design. To make the book more accessible to architects, planners, and other environmental designers with weak psychological foundations, we have explained some key terms and concepts in plain language as much as possible. Additionally, the book is well-organized, ensuring that each chapter is as independent and complete as possible. When readers have limited time or are only interested in a part of the book, they can choose to read only certain chapters or sections. For example, if they are not interested in theory, they can skip the theoretical sections and directly read the research materials and case studies on environmental design. The book maintains our consistently held empiricist perspective and adopts a reserved and cautious attitude toward other non-empiricist research, which may be one of its distinguishing features. However, this could also be a self-imposed limitation, as many architectural-related materials have not been considered. On the other hand, we are not psychologists and have limited knowledge of psychology. Despite our efforts to avoid it, there are undoubtedly many shortcomings in the book. We sincerely welcome readers and relevant experts to point them out, and we will greatly appreciate it.
