Features: College English Classification Reading (Volumes 1 and 2) is a reading textbook developed according to the basic and higher requirements of the New Teaching Requirements for College English Courses issued by the Ministry of Education. The difficulty level of this textbook aligns with the college English textbooks currently used by most undergraduate universities in China. It can be used as a standalone reading textbook for college English or paired with core college English textbooks to broaden reading horizons, enrich English language knowledge and expression, and improve reading skills. The compilers of this textbook are all frontline college English instructors with extensive teaching experience and a deep understanding of teaching requirements, student foundations, needs, and adaptable teaching methods. Therefore, the textbook is designed and written to meet learning demands, making it suitable for both classroom instruction and self-study.
At the same time, to cultivate students' comprehensive English proficiency, the textbook adopts diversified methods in exercise design, incorporating appropriate writing and translation tasks. This ensures that students develop integrated skills in English reading, writing, and translation. The passages selected for this textbook are all from recently published newspapers, magazines, and books in English-speaking countries, reflecting daily life and current affairs. To expose students to authentic English and the zeitgeist, we have made minimal edits to the selected materials, aiming to provide firsthand exposure to original English language. The content is rich, engaging, and covers various aspects of real-world life, including college students' lives, employment, finances, views on happiness, family, education, emotions, social issues, and even topics like population and globalization. This allows students to enhance their English skills while gaining cultural and social knowledge, thereby improving their overall competence.
Another feature of the textbook's structure is the division of reading exercises under the same topic into three parts: intensive reading, fast reading, and extensive reading. Each part has different requirements and training objectives. To expose students to authentic contemporary English materials and allow them to absorb language and information in its original form, the textbook generally avoids simplifying the selected passages. Instead, it provides annotations for difficulties, background knowledge, and cultural points throughout the text, ensuring students can read and comprehend the material smoothly. Some difficulties may also be included in comprehension exercises and translation tasks to cultivate students' independent learning and critical thinking abilities. We hope that this textbook serves as a bridge for English learning, enabling students to gain a better understanding and grasp of the authentic English reading world after using it.
