Publish Date: 2002-05-01
Features: In the southern part of China, amidst thousands of mountains and rivers, with misty water vapor swirling, there once existed a beautiful kingdom. The people called it Nan Zhao. Few knew the history of this land, and even fewer had heard of its legends. Only some stories from unknown dynasties, passed down by singing, were in the loud voices of the Miao people. These songs echoed through the clouds, swirling and intertwining in the valleys, layer upon layer of reverberations, as if never to fade. They gradually rose toward the sky, perhaps reaching the heavens, so that the gods might hear them. "Why do the Miao people sing in the valleys?" Before recounting the legends, the elders of the Miao tribe would always ask the children this question. And the children would always answer loudly: "To let the phoenix hear!"
