Features: This book is compiled based on the Han-to-English and English-to-Han translation types and content scope of the new National English Major Advanced Level Test Syllabus for 2004, aiming to improve readers' English-Chinese and Chinese-English translation skills and achieve the national advanced level standard. For convenience in writing and use, Han-to-English and English-to-Han translations are divided into two parts.
Part 1: Han-to-English Translation. This part consists of three chapters:
Chapter 1: Introduction to Han-to-English Translation, which introduces the requirements, standards, and characteristics of Han-to-English translation;
Chapter 2: Secrets to Mastering Han-to-English Translation, which focuses on several fundamental methods to improve Han-to-English translation skills. The better these methods are mastered, the faster the improvement in translation skills. It covers the five basic English sentence patterns, the five basic Chinese sentence patterns, and their translation strategies;
Chapter 3: Overcoming Difficulties in Han-to-English Translation, which is divided into three sections. To help readers improve quickly, each chapter is followed by targeted exercises, including article introductions, explanations of difficulties, and reference translations.
Part 2: English-to-Han Translation. This part consists of five chapters:
Chapter 1: Overview of English-to-Han Translation, which is divided into four sections, introducing the nature and purpose of translation, translation standards, the requirements of the advanced level test for English-to-Han translation, and the test-taking procedures for the advanced level English-to-Han translation;
Chapter 2: Basic English-to-Han Translation Techniques;
Chapter 3: Advanced English-to-Han Translation Techniques;
Chapter 4: Literary Translation Techniques;
Chapter 5: Translation Techniques for Other Text Types. Each chapter is somewhat independent yet interconnected, and the translation techniques introduced are not limited to a single genre or a few types of texts. This part also discusses the English-to-Han translation issues of frequently tested categories such as government, science and technology, culture, news, and literature. Each section is accompanied by corresponding exercises, explanations, and reference answers.
At the end of the book is an appendix. The theoretical and technical sections of this book primarily introduce the basic theories of translation and translation techniques suitable for Chinese readers. The theoretical introductions are designed to be practical, accessible, and in-depth. The exercises provided in the book cover a wide range of topics and are engaging to read. The selected exercise materials are new or relatively recent, giving the book a strong sense of contemporary relevance.
