Building America: Socio-Economic Changes and Implications During the American Industrial Revolution

Author: Han Qiming
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2004-10-01
Features: The main purposes of this book are three:
(1) By describing and analyzing the development of domestic transportation construction, urbanization process, agricultural growth, and agricultural difficulties during the industrialization period in the United States, as well as the social impacts of industrialization, it aims to broaden and inspire our perspectives and approaches in national economic construction. It provides new ideas and reference materials for domestic economic workers (including government agencies) to formulate economic strategies, understand both the universal and particularly challenging issues in domestic economic development, such as the construction of a national market, coordinated development between the eastern and western regions, coordinated urban-rural development, and social (economic) issues like employment and wealth inequality.
(2) This book references and synthesizes a large number of historical and economic works published in the United States over the past few decades. Due to objective constraints such as time, space, and access to materials, domestic scholars may temporarily be unable to delve as deeply or thoroughly into the same topics. While there may already be translated works on the history of U.S. economic development, these are written from an American perspective about America, rather than from a Chinese perspective about America. Chinese scholars conducting in-depth research on the history of U.S. economic development from the perspective of China's own economic construction and development may gain greater insights. From this perspective, the research in this book holds both practical significance and certain academic value.
(3) Developing the economy requires raising and enhancing the market economy awareness of the entire population. China's market economy construction started relatively late. For many people, the market economy is either completely unfamiliar or at least not very well understood as a phenomenon or concept. By describing the economic development of the United States and striving to make the language and expression as accessible, simple, and popular as possible, the author hopes to contribute to popularizing some common knowledge about market economy construction and the history of economic development.
