Excerpt:
1.1 Understanding the Chinese Version of Windows 95
This section focuses on learning what Windows is, how to start Windows 95, the various components of the Windows 95 desktop, and how to use the mouse to select items on the desktop.
1.1.1 Why Use Windows?
Microsoft Windows provides users with a computer "environment" based on icons and menus. This user-friendly environment is called a Graphical User Interface (GUI).
Explanation: A Graphical User Interface (GUI) is a computer interface based on graphics. Users do not input commands at a prompt but instead tell the computer what to do by selecting from menus or icons. Windows comes with many useful accessory programs, including a word processor (Notepad), a graphics program (Paint), and a communication program (HyperTerminal). It also provides convenient tools such as a calculator and a notepad. Some users may only need these programs, but those who require more features often use the Microsoft Office suite. The later sections of this book will cover the content of this suite.
Explanation: An application is another term for a computer program that performs useful tasks, such as Word for writing letters or Excel for creating spreadsheets. Sometimes, Windows refers to its small accessory programs as "applets." Since this book primarily focuses on the Chinese version of Microsoft Office, it assumes that readers have purchased the more feature-rich Chinese version of Microsoft Office applications. If readers are interested in Notepad, Paint, and other free Windows applications, please refer to the book "Easy Learning Windows 95" (contact 010-62562329).
1.1.2 Starting Chinese Windows 95
If Windows 95 is installed, the computer will automatically enter the Windows 95 desktop upon each startup, without the need to issue a special startup command. If you see a DOS prompt (e.g., C:\>) on the screen, enter EXIT and press Enter. If Windows 95 does not appear, restart the computer. If Windows 95 still does not appear, it may not have been installed.
1.1.3 Familiarizing Yourself with the Windows Desktop
The Windows 95 desktop consists of several components that exist throughout Windows 95 and Windows applications, making it convenient for users to complete tasks. The Windows desktop is composed of the following parts:
Icons
Icons represent programs (Microsoft Excel, WordPerfect, etc.), files (documents, spreadsheets, graphics), printer information (settings, installed fonts), and computer information (hard drives and floppy disk drives). Although you may see only a few icons (such as "My Computer" and "Recycle Bin") when you first see the Windows 95 desktop (the number of icons may vary depending on how Windows 95 was installed), icons are used consistently throughout Windows 95 and Windows applications. Icons come in two sizes: large and small, and Windows 95 uses four types of icons: program, file, printer, and computer icons. When these icons first appear in this book, they will be identified.
Desktop
This is the area that occupies the entire background. The mouse pointer is the screen pointer used to select items and commands (usually an arrow). Users move the pointer by moving the mouse on the desktop or mouse pad, and how to use the mouse will be explained later in this chapter.
My Computer
The "My Computer" icon allows users to open a window where they can browse the computer's configuration, find information about disk drives, the control panel, and printers.
