Features: The renowned novelist and historian Sun Jiaodi said, "When it comes to Qing Dynasty short stories, apart from Li Yu, there was truly no one else." Li Yu's life was one of a playwright and novelist. He abandoned the path of the imperial examination system and dedicated his entire life to drama and fiction, which was indeed rare among the literati and scholars of that era. A Silent Drama inherits the tradition of storytelling novels from the Ming Dynasty's "Three Words" and "Two Snaps," focusing on the desires and mundane affairs of ordinary people. Its purpose largely revolves around moral lessons and the idea of retribution for good and evil. However, the morality Li Yu promoted was far removed from the doctrines of Confucian scholars and even deliberately went against the grain. When it came to themes of love and marriage between men and women, Li Yu adopted a tolerant and understanding attitude, as seen in the story "Tan Chuyu Expresses Love in the Play, Liu Mangu Passes Away at the End of the Tune," which depicts actors falling in love and ultimately achieving a happy ending. This is the most outstanding story in A Silent Drama. Li Yu was an extremely innovative and extraordinarily talented artist who relentlessly pursued novelty and the unusual, making it a conscious pursuit in his writing. His novels are characterized by fresh themes, intricate plots, and unexpected twists. In terms of writing, his works are clear in theme, well-structured, with distinct threads, meticulous details, and a unique style that stands out on its own. Li Yu once said, "If it comes to unofficial histories, I do have some merits. I do not imitate the pout of a beautiful woman or pick up the spittle of a famous scholar, bringing a fresh perspective to the world at the time."
