Features: The author examines the relationship between ideology and academic research, as well as the mutual influence of public opinion on academic research through comparative arguments. Based on these comparative analyses, we can observe the political and academic characteristics of Japan domestically during post-war periods and their trends of change. This book primarily collects some of the author's recent papers, with the theme centered on post-war Japan's public opinion and academia in relation to China. Among them, the 6th section of Chapter "From the Imperial System to the Changes in Post-War Japanese Public Opinion" was first published in the November 1999 issue of Shudao; Chapter 2, "The Chinese Revolution and the Comintern", was published in the November 2002 issue of Japanese Studies, edited by the Peking University Center for Japanese Studies; the 3rd section of Chapter 3, "A Re-examination of Japanese Modernization", was published in the June 1989 issue of Japanese Issues, edited by the Institute of Japanese Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; and the 3rd section of Chapter 4, "Changes in Japanese National Consciousness as Seen in Public Opinion Surveys", was part of the research project The Prospects of Japan's Development (National Seventh Five-Year Plan Key Project) by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. When included in this book, some adjustments were made to the titles and lengths of the aforementioned sections.
