At the 1968 Mexico Olympics, American sprinter Lee Evans crossed the finish line first. He turned to look at the scoreboard — 9.95 seconds! Evans spread his arms and muttered something, but no one heard exactly what he said. In 1984, a journalist named David Pall lifted the veil on this mystery. At that time, Evans said, "God! That door was ajar."
Since Owens set a record of 10.3 seconds in 1936, the medical community, represented by Dr. James Grasse, had long asserted that the physical limit of human muscle fibers could not exceed 10 meters per second. Evans was convinced of this, and he set his 100-meter goal at 10.01 seconds. So when he saw his 9.95-second time, he was stunned. Ajar, just like the rope stretched across the finish line that could be passed with a touch.
