Livestock farming is a major component of income growth for many farmers, while diseases are the primary factors limiting the development of the industry. Therefore, disease prevention and control are particularly important. In China, many small-scale livestock farmers are located in remote mountainous areas far from cities and with inconvenient transportation. When livestock fall ill, they often die before veterinary professionals can be called. When veterinary professionals later ask farmers about the clinical symptoms exhibited by the sick animals before death and the post-mortem pathological changes, effective disease control and prevention are often hindered because farmers cannot accurately observe and record these symptoms and changes.
To address these issues, we carefully considered and compiled the book "Diseases of Cattle and Sheep: A Visual Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment," designed to be "easy to understand, easy to learn, and easy to implement" for farmers. In terms of writing, the book avoids the traditional approach of arranging diseases by pathogens and instead groups diseases with similar clinical symptoms together for easier differentiation. We first include a "guide" that allows readers to quickly identify what disease the livestock might have and what prevention and treatment methods to use. The text minimizes the use of technical terms and employs plain language to make the book accessible to a broad range of farmers.
The book is richly illustrated, with the clinical and pathological changes of the affected livestock providing readers with a visual understanding. Detailed descriptions accompany the images, helping readers "learn how to do it." The diagnostic, prevention, and treatment methods introduced in the book are simple, practical, and effective, avoiding the need for equipment or tools that farmers may lack, making it easy for them to "implement."
