Publish Date: 2004-06-01
Features: This book first introduces the basic contents of classical analytical mechanics and quantum mechanics in a concise and systematic manner, striving to root statistical theory in mechanical principles and organically integrate the two, thereby demonstrating the perfection and scientific nature of statistical thermodynamics. This approach not only helps readers overcome learning obstacles but also enables them to truly grasp the essence of the fundamental principles and methods of statistical thermodynamics, laying a solid theoretical foundation for mastering and developing statistical mechanics. The book primarily introduces the basic principles, methods, and typical applications of equilibrium statistical mechanics. It is divided into three parts, totaling 16 chapters. The first part, Mechanics and Microscopic State Description, provides the necessary foundations in classical analytical mechanics and quantum mechanics, as well as the correspondence between quantum and phase space volumes, to facilitate the transition between quantum and classical statistics. The second part, Statistical Theory of Independent Subsystems, takes the principle of equal probability as the fundamental assumption of statistics. It derives three statistical distribution laws using the method of ensembles and introduces the approach of statistical mechanics through ideal gas systems. The third part, Statistical System Theory, introduces the principles and methods of statistical mechanics in handling general systems and applies them to various typical chemical systems, appropriately covering recent advancements in the field. The authors have been teaching statistical mechanics to graduate students at the College of Chemistry, Peking University, for over 20 years, and the lecture notes have been revised and refined to form this book. Its content has been tested and proven in terms of scientific rigor, systematic structure, and practicality. This book can serve as a textbook and reference for chemistry majors and related disciplines in various universities and colleges.
