After the reform and opening-up, his educational ideas are reflected in many major reforms of China's basic education. After retiring, he traveled far and wide, carrying out educational practice and theoretical research on a broader scale, and led the national key project "Experimental Study of Primary and Secondary Education Models for the 21st Century." He is known as the "living fossil" of China's general education.
