Jia Zheng beats Baoyu, and Jia Mu hears about it and scolds Jia Zheng away. Baoyu is carried back to Yihongyuan to recuperate, and his sisters, including Daiyu and Baochai, all come to visit him, stirring up countless thoughts in his heart. Baoyu specially sends Qingwen to give Daiyu his daily-use handkerchiefs. Daiyu understands his meaning and feels deeply moved, writing poems on the handkerchiefs to express her feelings. Unbeknownst to her, this marks the beginning of her heartache.
Tanchun gathers the sisters of the Grand View Garden and Baoyu to form the "Rose Society." Everyone is very enthusiastic and takes on elegant names. Baoyu then asks Jia Mu to bring in Shi Xiangyun.
Liu Laolao brings her grandson Baer and comes with a bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetables to thank Jia Baoyu for his kindness, only to accidentally win Jia Baoyu's favor. Thus, Jia Mu leads everyone to take Liu Laolao on a tour of the Grand View Garden. Liu Laolao makes a fool of herself, causing everyone to laugh heartily, and Jia Mu is delighted. Fengjie uses Liu Laolao's longevity to ask her to name her beloved daughter. Liu Laolao leaves with many gifts, grateful beyond words.
Baochai overhears Daiyu quoting lines from The Story of the Western Chamber during a drinking game and gives her a heartfelt lecture, which moves Daiyu and gradually softens her hostility.
On the birthday of Jin Chuan, Baoyu goes to pay his respects to her, coincidentally also being Fengjie's birthday. Jia Mu orders everyone to throw a grand party for Fengjie. After getting drunk, Fengjie goes home to rest but accidentally encounters her husband Jia Lian with a maidservant's wife in an affair. Fengjie becomes furious and starts a quarrel. Drunk and emboldened, Jia Lian draws a sword to chase Fengjie.
